The soundtrack of the world around you

Music has been a part of me since I was conceived. I always add soundtracks to what I see around me in the world. A small set of raindrops hitting a windowpane, someone who is waiting on a bus, a moment in time that you wish you could pause, everything has it’s own atmosphere. I find that the music to acompany it is already there. You need to watch and feel the moment as if you’re in a cinema. When you are prone to walk around with music stuck in your head all day it’s just the proces of unlocking it.

A good exercise is to try and write something cinematic without having the benefit of a piece of film to go along with it. Imagine your own scene or imagine a character. How do you represent multiple aspects of the character or moment in a coherent piece? It’s about making a choice aswell. You cannot dwell forever in competing ideas. Sometimes you have to go with your gut and trust that something good will come out of it. There’s plenty of time and opportunity to change things about it along the way.

When I play a guitar solo I approach my playing the same way. When I haven’t written out a specific melodic solo I always improvise. What I find is that if I play 15 takes, the first or second is always the best. What I’m trying to explain is that you have to trust the knowledge you have stored inside your mind. All the countless pieces of music you’ve heard or films you have seen. Your subconsious will tap into these and make creative unique choices.

I encourage you all to hear the music in moments that you see around you. To learn more about yourself as a composer after you’ve analysed these first thoughts that come to mind!
